Does my LLC need a general business license in NY?

Do I need a license to freelance or consult?
Generally no. Management consulting, marketing, web development, writing, and similar professional services do not require state or local licenses in New York. Just your LLC formation is sufficient.
What about the NYC Commercial Rent Tax?
If your business rents commercial space in Manhattan south of 96th Street and pays annual rent over $250,000, you owe the NYC Commercial Rent Tax (3.9% of base rent exceeding the threshold). This is not a license but is a unique NYC obligation many new businesses miss.
